In 2024-25, Oracy became a school priority as using evidenced-based research showed that teaching Oracy skills has a significant impact on pupils' learning and development.
'On average, oral language approaches have a high impact on pupil outcomes of 6 months’ additional progress' (EEF, July 2021)
Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding, and engage with others through spoken language and listening
At Hurdsfield Primary School, we want our pupils to be able to advocate for themselves: their individual and unique voices deserve to be heard. We celebrate the diverse voices of our pupils and empower them to be agents of change.
Successful talk builds connections and effective relationships and it allows us to express our feelings. It gives us the chance to articulate ideas and develop our understanding.
We teach oracy skills explicitly, as a thread which runs throughout the whole curriculum and spreads into daily school life.
Our pupils will develop the oracy skills and vocabulary that they need to thrive in school and beyond, making society a fairer, more equitable place where everyone learns how to use their voice.
This year, our teaching staff have introduced the following strategies to our pupils to use when speaking and listening in different situations and circumstances:
1) Our Hurdsfield Listening Ladder
2) Nesting
3) Talk Tokens
4) Talk Roles
