Equality Objectives

Promoting Equality for all at Hurdsfield Primary School

'Only our best will do'

Our school ensures that it promotes equality within its school workforce and pupils by focusing on the following areas:

  • Eliminating discrimination and other prohibited conduct
  • Advancing equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Fostering good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

In practice, this means:

  • Demonstrating awareness of our duties under the Equality Act by assessing the impact any decision or action will have on people with protected characteristics
  • Considering any equality implications when developing and approving policies, and reviewing them regularly with equality in mind
  • Carrying out these analyses seriously, rigorously, and with an open mind.
  • We take responsibility ourselves, as a school, and we do not delegate the responsibility to anyone else.

Protected Characteristics

We understand the principles of the Equality Act 2010 and the work needed to ensure that those with protected characteristics are not discriminated against and are given equal opportunity.

As a school, we teach the Equality Act 2010 through 'No Outsiders' learning which teaches equality through children's storybooks without bias.

A protected characteristic under the Equality Act includes the groups listed below:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Race
  • Sex
  • Gender reassignment
  • Maternity and pregnancy
  • Religion and belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marriage and civil partnership

In order to meet our general duties listed above, the law requires us to do some specific duties to demonstrate how we meet the general duties.

These are to:

  • publish equality information - to demonstrate compliance with the general duty across its functions. We will not publish any information that can specifically identify any child or member of staff.
  • prepare and publish equality objectives.
